We had good weather the morning of the canoe outing Mr. Rhines organized for the morning of May 12th. Our group of mostly young scouts and soon-to-be scouts paddled downstream into Fairhaven Bay, then retraced their strokes upstream in an increasing breeze. But it was generally easy going, and all hands demonstrated burgeoning skill with their paddles, and arrived back on land dry and safe.

Ian’s water-polo ball splashed scouts when hurled close to their craft, but that wildness didn’t scare the fishes away from Kent’s worm-baited hook, as you can see in the gallery of photos for this adventure.

It was fun to see new faces in the troop, namely Kent and Jack , and Jack’s dad, Daryl.

See the photos here.

Thank you to all who attended today’s trip into Boston to tour the Coast Guard Base! The Trip was a great success! The highlights include:

-A Presentation on the USCG; it’s mission and capabilities

-A guided tour of the Base Command Center and Communications Center

-A guided, in-depth tour of the 270′ Cutter Spencer

-A guided tour of a 45′ Response Boat-Medium (RB-M)

-A guided tour of the typical 25′ Response Boat-Small (RB-S)

-A guided tour of the 84′ Flying Fish

-Lunch at Faneuil Hall afterwards

We were very fortunate to be accompanied by inbound Webelo Jack Drummond, and his father Daryl. Photos of this excursion will soon be posted on the Troop Website. In 2005, Troop 127 took a similar trip and also saw the Spencer. Attached are photos of the troop from today’s trip and from the trip 7 years ago, in the same spot in front of the deck gun.

A special thanks to CDR Morkan for hosting us! All around the Coast Guard Personnel were very friendly and accommodating. Several we encountered were Eagle Scouts! It is interesting to note the similarity between the Coast Guard Motto Semper Paratus (“Always Prepared”) and the BSA Motto Be Prepared.

As a final note, often times Scouts are reluctant to wear a Class A uniform, especially in public. When the conductor saw our uniforms, he only charged us for 5 tickets. There were 15 in our group. The simple act of wearing the Class A uniform saved the Troop approximately $115!

YiS,

Will Bursaw
